The following email exchange occurred recently between Paul, a customer from Maine, and Steve Carl, president of C&C CarWorx, also known as mycarworx.com which sells a wide variety of quality aftermarket accessories to fit models of Subaru from 1998 through 2012. The correspondence pertained to the popular lift assist handle for the rear gate of 2003-2012 Subaru Forester, 2006-2012 Subaru Tribeca, and 2005 - 2012 Subaru Legacy and Outback Wagon.
The durable black textured composite plastic rear gate lift assist handle bar facilitates clean, easy opening and closing of the rear gate, and is impervious to rust and damage. It is supplied complete with hardware.

Hi Steve,
I had the Lift Gate Assist Bar installed today, and it seems fine, however I wanted to let you know that I prefer the ‘older’ version of the bar.
This version with the handle-like center, provides a flexibility that is a bit disconcerting. The original ’older’ version felt very stable and was of great help.
This new version will likely provide the same good performance, but it does feel flimsy in the center. I continue to think that this is a good product but wanted you to know my initial appraisal.

Thank you for your feedback.
The new bar is a glass-filled material which your side view mirror housings are also made from. A strong material, but as you point out, has more flex then the metal part did.
The other factors that make it seem to flex more is that it has more rubber insulator to protect the vehicle body from contact with the hardware. The new tail gates are a lighter gauge aluminum, not steel material, that has more flex, and these bars are designed to float on the deck lid as opposed to being tightened to sandwich the bar and its hardware to the tailgate.
None of the assist bars were ever engineered to be used as anything but an assist handle. Never use any handle as a tie down, since that is not its purpose.
I hope you are happy with your purchase, and it serves all your needs. Please share your thoughts as you use the bar.

Yes, OK I will keep you posted - though it may be a month or so before I get enough use out of it to warrant a comment.
You clearly have put a lot of thought into this product and I have no doubt that it is a good if not great product. My comments are given from a consumer standpoint - all we know is what we see and feel.
The GOOD news is that a customer will not know how much it does flex until it is installed. My point here is that IF a customer had an opportunity to Feel how it works when installed - feels how flexible it is - it might give them concern about buying it; it doesn’t FEEL strong.
The BAD news is that a customer will not know how much it does flex until it is installed. My point here is that you might well get a LOT of correspondence on this concern after it is installed so maybe doing a form email – with room for an added note – might be a good idea.
Your appeal as a company is the personal touch you give things by responding to emails. So, you will not want to lose that, BUT I am betting that you have a lot of other things to do besides answering emails; it’s a thought.
BTW if you folks start making chrome tail pipe extensions for the Outback let me know. I cannot seem to find them anywhere for my 2012 - yet.

We have not (yet) had any complaints about the bar once installed. All the negative feedback is from pre-installed bar customers…as you cover in your comments.

The flexing was brought to my attention by the person who installed the bar. In use, it works very well.

A bit of History of the 48hrs of Tristate…
It all started about 10 years ago when 5 NASIOC then I-Club members decided they wanted to take a tour of the Tri-state region to meet other members and raise money for a good cause at the same time. Since its humble beginnings where we raised $1,500, the project has escalated to raising over $35,000 last year and encompassing 60 or more cars on the journey.
We’ve expanded the trip over the years to accommodate a more relaxed drive and more social time now spanning some 72 hrs. This year it will end up being 48hrs X 2 in terms of time because we’ve been invited by Subaru of America to visit not only their headquarters in Cherry Hill, NJ but also get a personalized tour of their manufacturing plant in Indiana.
